Cut Practice Time to Keep Kids Playing: A Coach's Call

We're burning kids out with year-round, single-sport training. Here's how we can cut practice time, diversify, and keep them in the game.

We lose 70% of our youth athletes by age 13. That's not a guess; it's what the American Academy of Pediatrics reports (AAP Overuse Injuries, Overtraining, and Burnout, 2024). As coaches, we see it every season: the 12-year-old who was all-in on soccer now sitting on the bench, staring at her cleats, counting the minutes until practice ends. We blame video games, lack of grit, or changing interests. But the real culprit is us. We've turned youth sports into a year-round grind, and we're driving kids away.

This isn't about being a soft coach or giving kids a pass. It's about recognizing that our current approach—early specialization, heavy training volumes, and no breaks—is not just failing kids; it's hurting them. The evidence is clear, and we can do better. Here's what we need to change.

Why We Over-Train and Specialize Early

We've all felt the pressure. Parents want their kids to get ahead. Club directors want winning teams. And we, as coaches, want to prove our worth. So we add more practices, more games, more travel. We tell ourselves that the kid who starts early and trains year-round will have an edge. But the data says otherwise. The average American child now plays only 1.63 sports regularly, down 13% since 2019 (Aspen Institute State of Play, 2024). That's not diversification; that's narrowing. And when we push kids to specialize before high school, we're increasing their risk of overuse injuries. A systematic review found that early specialization raises the odds of overuse injury anywhere from 1.27 to 4.0 times (Fabricant et al.). That's a wide range, but the direction is consistent: specialization hurts.

We also see the financial and access barriers. The average sports family spent over $1,000 on a child's primary sport in 2024, up 46% since 2019 (Project Play). That's a huge investment, and it puts pressure on parents to see a return. But the return isn't a college scholarship; it's a healthy, happy kid who loves the game. We need to remember that.

What the Research Really Says About Practice and Rest

The AAP is explicit: young athletes should take 1-2 days off per week from a particular sport and 2-3 months off from that sport each year (AAP). That's not a suggestion; it's a prescription. Yet how many of our teams actually do that? We practice six days a week, play tournaments on weekends, and then run off-season clinics. We're not following the advice that's meant to protect kids.

And it's not just about overuse injuries. High training volumes and early specialization are linked to burnout and attrition—that 70% dropout rate (AAP). When kids are tired, injured, and not having fun, they quit. We're the ones creating that environment.

How We Can Cut Practice Time Without Cutting Corners

Let's be practical. We can't just cancel practice and hope for the best. But we can be smarter about how we use time. Here's a specific example: in a typical week, a 10-year-old soccer player might practice three times for 90 minutes, plus a game on Saturday. That's 4.5 hours of organized soccer. Instead, we could do two practices of 75 minutes and encourage the third day to be free play—kick a ball around the park, ride a bike, swim. That frees up time for another sport or just unstructured activity. The AAP recommends promoting participation in multiple sports (AAP), and research shows that kids who play multiple sports have lower injury rates and stay in sports longer. We don't need to be the only coach in their life.

Also, we need to build in rest. That means a real off-season. For a baseball pitcher, that means no throwing for at least 2-3 months a year (AAP). We can structure our season to have a true break, not just a change of jersey. We can also cap weekly practice hours based on age, but the fact base doesn't give specific hour limits, so exact figures vary by sport and level. The principle is clear: less is more.

What Happens When We Step Back

We're not just preventing injuries; we're promoting better outcomes. A meta-analysis of 46 studies found that youth sport participation has positive effects on physical activity, health, and wellbeing, and reduces unhealthy body composition and mental ill-being (Int J Behavioral Nutrition & Physical Activity, 2025). But that's only if kids stay in sports. If we burn them out, they lose those benefits. In Kansas City, inactive youth reported feeling depression or hopelessness 20% of the time versus 9% for active youth (Kansas City Star). That's a stark difference. We're not just coaches; we're in the mental health business.

And when we let kids play multiple sports, they might actually get better at their primary sport. The Division I athlete study showed that only 16.9% were highly specialized in 9th grade, but that jumped to 41.1% by 12th grade (Sports Health). Even elite athletes didn't specialize early. So we can stop pressuring 8-year-olds to pick a sport. They have time.

The Bottom Line: We're the Adults, So Let's Act Like It

The single most important thing to remember: we are the ones who control practice schedules, season lengths, and the culture of our teams. If we don't change, kids will keep quitting. So let's cut practice time, encourage multi-sport play, and give kids the rest they need. It's not about being lazy; it's about being smart. Our job is to keep kids playing, not to create miniature professionals. And the evidence shows that if we do, they'll be healthier, happier, and more likely to stay in the game.
