Keep Them Playing: A Coach's Case for Cutting Practice Time

You want to win, but your kid is quitting. Here's how to cut practice, keep them healthy, and actually win more.

“Coach, my kid wants to quit. Can you talk to them?”

You’ve heard it. Maybe you’ve even said it. The kid who was all-in in October is burned out by March. You’ve got a roster of 12, and two are already making excuses to skip. You’re a coach, not a counselor, but you’re the one who can fix this. The blunt truth: you’re probably overtraining them. And the fix isn’t more grit; it’s less practice.

Imagine You’re Coaching a 12-Year-Old Travel Team

Picture this: you coach a 12U travel baseball team. You’ve got practice three nights a week, games on weekends, and a few of your best players are also on “elite” squads that train year-round. One of your star pitchers, let’s call him Jake, is 12 years old. He throws hard, he loves the game, and he’s already had one bout of elbow soreness. His parents are pushing him to specialize—they’ve heard that’s how you get a college scholarship. You’ve got a tournament coming up, and you need Jake to pitch. What do you do?

You could push. Or you could pull back. Here’s what the facts say.

The Overuse Injury Math: 50% of Injuries Are Overuse

Overuse injuries aren’t a fluke. The American Academy of Pediatrics estimates that 50% of all sports-related injuries in children are from overuse (AAP Overuse Injuries, Overtraining, and Burnout, 2024). Growing bones are less tolerant of stress, so a 12-year-old’s elbow is not a miniature adult’s. In one study of 1,190 young athletes aged 7-18, sports-specialized training was an independent risk factor for injury, even after accounting for age and weekly training hours (Jayanthi et al., 2015). The odds ratio was 1.27 for any injury and 1.36 for serious overuse injury. That’s not a coin flip; that’s a 27% to 36% increased risk just from specializing.

Specialization Is the Enemy, Not the Goal

Here’s the kicker: early specialization doesn’t even guarantee success. Among Division I college athletes, only 16.9% were highly specialized in 9th grade (Sports Health, 2021). By 12th grade, that number rose to 41.1%, meaning most elite college athletes didn’t specialize until late high school. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends delaying specialization until after puberty, around age 15-16 (AAP, 2024). So why are you letting a 12-year-old throw 200 days a year?

What the Numbers Say About Rest Days

The AAP is specific: young athletes should take 1-2 days off per week from a particular sport, and 2-3 months off from that sport each year (AAP, 2024). That’s not a suggestion; it’s a prescription. For Jake, that means no pitching on back-to-back days, at least one full day off from baseball each week, and a solid chunk of the year where he’s not throwing a baseball at all. And it’s not just about rest—it’s about variety. The AAP recommends promoting participation in multiple sports rather than overtraining and overscheduling.

The Concussion Risk Nobody Talks About

You might think overuse is the only hidden cost, but there’s more. In the 2017 CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 15.1% of high school students reported at least one sports-related concussion in the past year (CDC MMWR, 2017). And the risk goes up with the number of teams: 16.7% on one team, 22.9% on two, and 30.3% on three or more. So the more you pile on, the more hits to the head. That’s not a reason to ban contact sports, but it’s a reason to limit the load.

Your Game Plan: Cut Practice, Not Players

So here’s what you do with Jake. First, talk to his parents. Show them the numbers: the 50% overuse statistic, the AAP rest-day recommendations, and the fact that only 16.9% of Division I athletes specialized in 9th grade. Tell them that Jake’s elbow soreness is a red flag, not a badge of honor.

Then, restructure your team’s schedule. Cut one practice a week. That’s three days down to two. Give the kids two full days off from baseball every week. And during the summer, shut it down for two months. Let them play soccer, swim, or just ride bikes. The world won’t end. Your win-loss record might dip slightly, but you’ll have a healthier, happier roster.

And here’s the kicker: the kids who play multiple sports might actually be better athletes. The research on youth sport participation shows positive effects on physical activity, health, and wellbeing (Int J Behavioral Nutrition & Physical Activity, 2025). Plus, a meta-analysis found that higher-intensity early specialization significantly increased injury risk compared with low intensity (Fabricant et al., 2016). So the multi-sport kid is not just avoiding injury; they’re building a better athletic foundation.

What About the Parents Who Want to Specialize?

You’ll get pushback. Some parents will say, “But the travel team coach said…” or “I want my kid to get a scholarship.” Here’s your comeback: The average family spends $1,016 per year on their child’s primary sport, a 46% increase since 2019 (Project Play, 2025). That’s a lot of money for a 12-year-old who might quit by age 13. The AAP notes that about 70% of youth athletes drop out of organized sports by age 13, with burnout and injury as contributing causes (AAP, 2024). So the parents who are pushing hardest might be the ones pushing their kid out.

Tell them: “You want a scholarship? Then keep them playing. That means keeping them healthy and enjoying the game. The kid who’s still playing at 17 has a better shot than the one who’s burned out at 13.”

The Takeaway: Less Practice, More Play

As a coach, you have the power to change the culture. You can be the coach who says, “We’re going to practice hard, but we’re also going to rest hard.” You can be the one who tells a 12-year-old to go play another sport. The data is clear: overuse injuries are common, specialization is risky, and burnout is real. The best thing you can do for your players is to give them a break. So cut one practice, take two months off, and let them be kids. They’ll come back stronger, and they’ll stick around longer.
