Instead of pushing specialization, push diversification. Now, I'm not saying your kid should never specialize. But wait until puberty. Practical Parenting: How to Do It Right
So what's a parent to do? First, stop the year-round travel team grind. Let your child play a different sport each season. If they play soccer in the fall, let them try basketball in the winter. If they're a baseball kid, give them a break in the winter and let them swim or run track. This isn't just about preventing injuries—it's about keeping sports fun.
Second, enforce rest. The AAP's recommendation of 1-2 days off per week and 2-3 months off per year is not optional. It's the minimum to prevent overuse injuries. And if your child complains, remind them that even professionals have off-seasons.
