The evidence is overwhelming: early specialization doesn't build better players; it builds injured, burned-out kids who quit. As practitioners who work with young athletes every day, we've seen the fallout. And we're here to bust the myth with data and a clear recommendation: keep your kid playing multiple sports until at least high school.
Isn't early specialization necessary to go D1?
No. Look at the numbers from a study of current Division I athletes: only 16.9% were highly specialized in 9th grade (Sports Health Division I specialization study). That means the vast majority of college athletes weren't single-sport kids in middle school. They diversified, then narrowed later. The path to college sports isn't a straight line from toddler travel ball—it's a winding road that includes other sports, other interests, and a childhood that doesn't revolve around one ball.
Doesn't year-round training make my kid better?
It might make them better at one sport, but at what cost? The AAP reports that about 70% of youth athletes drop out of organized sports by age 13, with burnout and injury as key drivers (AAP Overuse Injuries, Overtraining, and Burnout, 2024).
