The Travel Team Trap: Why Your Kid Should Stay Local

Travel teams are burning out kids and emptying wallets. Here's how to spot the trap and keep your young athlete healthy, happy, and still improving.

Here's a number that should stop you cold: 70%. That's the share of youth athletes who drop out of organized sports by age 13, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP Overuse Injuries, Overtraining, and Burnout, 2024). And if you're a parent or coach in the travel-team world, you've probably watched it happen—the kid who loved the game at eight, burned out by twelve, quit by thirteen. We see it every season. And the travel team circuit, for all its promises of college scholarships and elite development, is often the very engine of that burnout.

Let's be clear about what we mean by travel. Not every select team is a problem. But the pressure to specialize early, play year-round, and chase exposure is reshaping youth sports into a high-cost, high-injury, high-attrition machine. The data is unambiguous: early specialization increases injury risk, and the financial burden is spiraling. Yet families keep signing up, convinced that more is better. It's not. Here's what we actually do when a family asks us whether to go the travel route—and what you should do too.

The Real Cost of the Travel Circuit

Imagine you're a parent of a 10-year-old who's been invited to join a regional travel soccer team. The coach says it's the only way she'll get recruited. The fee is $2,500 a season, plus travel, hotels, and tournament entry. The Aspen Institute's 2025 survey found the average sports family spends $1,016 a year on their child's primary sport—and that's up 46% since 2019, roughly twice the rate of inflation (Project Play family spending survey, 2025). But the cost isn't just financial. The travel schedule means year-round training, tournaments on weekends, and little time for other sports or just being a kid. The Dropout Cliff

The Equity Problem Nobody Talks About

Travel teams are also a class filter. That's not about talent; it's about money. And when you gatekeep elite development behind a paywall, you're not just limiting opportunity—you're narrowing the talent pool. The game loses. And the kids who can't afford it lose the chance to even try.

What We Actually Recommend

So what's the alternative? It's not "don't play sports." It's "play more sports, less intensively."   • Play at least two sports a year, ideally three. Different movements, different skills, different social circles.

  • Skip the travel team until at least age 12 or 13. Local rec leagues and school teams provide plenty of development.
  • If you do join a travel team, limit it to one sport and one team—don't stack multiple teams in the same sport.
