Travel Sports: The Real Cost of the Club Circuit

Travel teams promise elite development, but data shows early specialization, burnout, and $1,016-a-year costs. Here's why most kids should stay local and multi-sport.

Imagine you're a parent in Kansas City, and your nine-year-old daughter just made the local travel soccer team. You're proud, but you're also staring at a $1,500 season fee, three practices a week, and weekend tournaments that eat your Saturdays. You've heard that travel is the only way to get college looks, but you're not sure if it's worth it. This is a familiar crossroads for sports families, and the facts suggest a different path.

The Specialization Trap

Travel teams often push early specialization. Coaches want year-round commitment, and parents believe that's the ticket to scholarships. But the evidence says otherwise. A systematic review found that early specialization is linked to overuse injuries, with odds ratios ranging from 1.27 to 4.0 (Fabricant et al.). A clinical study of 1,190 young athletes aged 7-18 confirmed that specialized training is an independent risk factor for injury, even after accounting for age and training hours (Jayanthi et al.). The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends delaying specialization until after puberty, around age 15-16, precisely to avoid burnout and injury (AAP).

The pressure is real. Among Division I college athletes, only 16.9% were highly specialized in 9th grade, but that number jumps to 41.1% by 12th grade (Sports Health). Most elite athletes didn't specialize early; they diversified. Travel teams that demand single-sport year-round play before high school are fighting the science.

The Burnout Cliff

Here's the uncomfortable truth: about 70% of youth athletes drop out of organized sports by age 13 (AAP). Burnout is a leading cause. Travel schedules amplify that burnout. A 2025 survey of 3,827 U.S. youth aged 10-17 found that 17.9% are former participants, and injury risk is a top reason they quit (Aspen Institute 2025 Youth Athlete Survey).

Travel doesn't guarantee retention. It often accelerates it. The AAP warns that the professionalization of youth sports drives high training volumes and pressure, increasing overuse injury, overtraining, and attrition. When a 10-year-old is playing 10 months a year, missing school, and skipping birthday parties, the fun drains out. And fun is the number one reason kids play—86.8% of current youth athletes say they have fun, and 43.0% of never-players would start if it were fun (Aspen Institute 2025).

The Real Cost of Travel

Let's talk money. The average American sports family spent $1,016 on their child's primary sport in 2024, a 46% jump since 2019 (Project Play). Travel teams blow past that. In Kansas City, low-income kids are three times less likely to play travel sports than high-income kids—only 8% of low-income kids participate (State of Play KC). Nationally, the income participation gap has widened from 13.6 percentage points in 2012 to 20.2 in 2024 (State of Play 2025).

That $1,016 is just the average. Travel families often spend $3,000 to $5,000 a year on club fees, uniforms, travel, and hotels. And for what? The Aspen Institute estimates parents spend over $40 billion annually on youth sports (Project Play). Meanwhile, most kids who play travel won't get a scholarship. The math doesn't work.

Burnout and Injury Up Close

Meet Jake, a 12-year-old baseball pitcher who joined a travel team that plays year-round. He throws 80 pitches a game, every weekend, with no breaks. By 14, he's diagnosed with a UCL tear. The Hoag Orthopedic Institute reports that athletes under 18 now account for nearly a third of Tommy John surgeries at some centers (Hoag). Jake's story is common. Overuse injuries account for 50% of all sports injuries in kids (AAP). The AAP recommends 1-2 days off per week and 2-3 months off per year from a specific sport. Travel teams rarely honor that.

Girls face another risk. Female athletes suffer ACL injuries at higher rates than males—2.30 times higher in high school sports (Stanley et al.). Specialized, high-volume training without proper rest increases risk. Travel schedules that don't allow recovery are a hazard.

Concussions also spike with team count. The CDC found that 30.3% of high school students on three or more teams reported a concussion in the past year, versus 16.7% on one team (CDC MMWR). More games, more exposure, more risk.

What Should You Do?

Here's my advice: skip the travel team for elementary and middle schoolers. Keep your kid in multiple sports, at least until high school. Local rec leagues offer practice, competition, and fun for a fraction of the cost. That's where 47.0% of current youth athletes still play—at school or in community settings (Aspen Institute 2025).

If your teen is genuinely elite and wants to pursue college sports, then consider club or travel in high school. But even then, specialization should be gradual. The AAP recommends delaying specialization until age 15-16. And remember, most Division I athletes didn't specialize early; they played multiple sports until late high school.

The travel circuit is a business. It profits from parental anxiety and dreams of scholarships. But the data is clear: early specialization leads to injury, burnout, and dropout. Diversified, multi-sport play builds healthier, happier athletes. Save your money, save your kid's knees, and let them play because it's fun.
