Your Star Player Isn't a Machine—Here's What Year-Round Training Really Does

Coaching a 12-year-old who lives for the game? His parents might want him pitching all winter, but here's what the research says about that choice.

Let's say you've got a 12-year-old who's obsessed with baseball. He's got a great arm, his dad's already talking scholarships, and the family's got him in private lessons plus travel ball plus winter training. He's basically playing or practicing every single day. You've noticed he's been rubbing his elbow after games, but his parents think it's just normal soreness.

You might feel like you're overstepping if you say something. But here's the thing: the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that young athletes take 1-2 days off per week from a specific sport, and 2-3 months off from that sport each year. That's not a random guideline—it's a warning.

Meet Jake

I remember coaching a kid like that—let's call him Jake. He was 12, had a cannon for an arm, and his parents had him in pitching lessons all winter. He'd already had elbow pain twice that season. When I tried to suggest he take a break, his dad said, "He's got a bright future—we can't afford to slow down." I get it. But that's exactly the mindset that leads to overuse injuries.

The Overuse Problem Is Real

Jake's not an outlier. Research shows that about half of all sports-related injuries in kids are from overuse. And it's getting worse. A 2025 study from Hoag Orthopedic Institute found that athletes under 18 now account for nearly a third of Tommy John surgeries at some major centers. That's a surgery that used to be for college or pro pitchers. The cause? Too much throwing, year-round, without enough rest.

Why Specializing Early Backfires

Jake's situation fits what researchers call "early specialization." That means training in one sport, excluding others, and playing more than 8 months a year. And the numbers are clear: specialized athletes have a higher risk of overuse injuries. One review found odds ratios ranging from 1.27 to 4.0. Another study of over a thousand young athletes found that specializing was an independent risk factor, even after adjusting for age and training hours.

But it's not just about the body. The pressure to specialize can burn kids out mentally. About 70% of young athletes drop out of organized sports by age 13. So all that year-round training might not even keep Jake in the game. He might quit before high school.

What Actually Works Better

Here's what I'd suggest: enforce the 8-month rule. Have Jake take 2-3 months off from baseball each year, and 1-2 days off per week during the season. That's not being lazy—it's giving his arm time to heal.

Second, push for multi-sport participation. The AAP recommends it. Playing different sports not only cuts injury risk but also makes him a better athlete overall. And third, talk to his parents about the long game. Only about 17% of Division I college athletes were highly specialized in 9th grade, rising to 41% by 12th grade. So specialization can wait until high school—and it probably should.
