Imagine you're at the kitchen table, watching your 10-year-old shovel down dinner in five minutes so you can race to yet another practice. You've already done this three times this week, and it's only Tuesday. You tell yourself it's worth it—they love the sport, they're getting great coaching, and every college scout will want them. But somewhere between the $1,016 you spent on their primary sport this year and the 70% chance they'll quit by age 13, you have to wonder: are you building an athlete or just burning out a kid? I'm here to give you the blunt truth: the system is rigged against your child's long-term love of the game, and you're probably feeding it. But it doesn't have to be that way. You can raise a healthy, happy athlete who actually sticks with sports—if you stop chasing the travel-team pipeline and start playing the long game.
Why is my kid so tired all the time?
Because they're overdoing it. The American Academy of Pediatrics estimates that 50% of all sports-related injuries in kids are from overuse—that's not a sprain from a bad landing, that's the slow grind of year-round, repetitive stress that growing bones can't handle. And it's not just physical: the AAP explicitly ties the professionalization of youth sports to overtraining, burnout, and attrition. If your child is dragging through school, complaining of aches that won't go away, or losing the spark they once had, that's your cue to step in—not to buy them a new pair of cleats.
Is early specialization really that bad?

So if you have a 9-year-old who's already "all in" on one sport, you're not being dedicated—you're being negligent.
But my kid wants to be the next LeBron—shouldn't I support that?
Supporting a dream doesn't mean chasing it down a cliff. Here's the reality check: among Division I college athletes, only 16.9% were highly specialized in 9th grade—that number jumps to 41.1% by 12th grade (Sports Health). In other words, the kids who make it to the big time didn't specialize early; they waited until high school. The road to success is not a straight line through year-round travel ball. It's a winding path that includes soccer, basketball, swimming, and time just being a kid. If your 8-year-old is already picking one sport and dropping everything else, you're not building a future pro—you're building a future dropout.
Aren't travel teams the only way to get noticed?
No, and here's why: only 8% of low-income kids in the Kansas City region play travel sports, yet plenty of them go on to play in college (Kansas City Star). The idea that travel teams are the gatekeeper to success is a myth perpetuated by—surprise—travel team organizations that profit from your fear. What actually matters is that your kid stays in the game. The participation data shows that 39.8% of kids aged 6-17 regularly play team sports, and the average number of sports they play is 1.63, down 13% since 2019 (Aspen Institute). We're seeing a generation of kids who are more specialized, more burned out, and more likely to quit. Don't be part of that statistic.
How much time off does my kid really need?
More than you think. The AAP recommends that young athletes take 1-2 days off per week from a particular sport, and 2-3 months off from that sport each year. That's not a suggestion—it's a prescription to prevent injury and burnout. If your child is playing the same sport 12 months a year, they're violating the most basic safety guideline. And here's the kicker: kids who play multiple sports actually get more total physical activity, which is linked to better health outcomes. A meta-analysis of 46 longitudinal studies found that youth sport participation has significant positive effects on physical activity, health, and mental well-being (Int J Behavioral Nutrition & Physical Activity, 2025). So by letting your kid play soccer in the fall and basketball in the winter, you're not diluting their talent—you're building a foundation that lasts.
What about concussions? Is my kid safe?

Instead of pumping money into elite travel teams, consider investing in a variety of local rec leagues and letting your kid explore. You'll save money, and they'll be more likely to stick with it.
What I'd actually do
Here's my blunt recommendation: pull your kid off the year-round track. If they're under 15, they should be playing at least two sports per season, and they should take at least two months off from any single sport each year. That's not coddling—that's following the AAP's guidelines. And when you do sign them up, choose local rec leagues over travel teams unless they're truly elite and your kid is begging for it. The data is clear: early specialization doesn't produce better athletes, it produces injured and burned-out kids who quit. The ultimate goal is to keep them playing, because the benefits are huge—after-school sports participants show better executive function, processing speed, and fewer ADHD symptoms (After-School Sports global analysis, 2025). So be the parent who says no to the travel team, yes to the park, and no to the year-round grind. Your kid will thank you—and they'll still be playing when they're 18.
